Pie in the Face

Thanks to everyone for supporting the youth mission trip this summer! The Pie-in-the-Face fundraiser raised over $200 for our trip in July to Macon Georgia.

Taco Breakfasts are always the first Sunday of the month, and our next Taco breakfast (June 6th) will all support the youth mission trip.

Thanks to everyone for all their continuing dedication to the youth program at St. Michaels'.

Family

Escape from this wet winter mix that is streaming down from the sky at EYC tonight! We are going to have some delicious Mac and Cheese tonight with salad and bread. For a special treat we are going to be celebrating February birthdays tonight with some cupcakes.

Tonight we will be finishing Mrs. Doubtfire and talking about the role Family plays in the decisions we make. In order to gain a different perspective on the concept of family we are going to look at the relationship between Ruth and Naomi.

So come tonight for some food and fellowship with your friends! Hope to see you all at 6pm with $5!

What a Beautiful Tuesday!

This past Sunday was a great success! Not only was it Taco Sunday, but a handful of the youth were able to participate in SunOne after church. Youth from St. Michael's, St. Matthew's, St. David's and All Saints participated in a fun scavenger hunt across UT's campus. I was very proud of my team, which included our very own Elizabeth Emery, for winning the activity! The only nervous part of the whole day was when I realized I was driving around on EMPTY!!! I am sorta bad at remembering to check how much gas I have until I am almost out. Even the end of the day ended on a happy note as I watched the Saints win the super bowl. While I am not a big football fan I really was happy for the Saints on their win. I hope everyone is having a great start to their week, and I hope to see everyone tomorrow at EYC!

SunOne February 7th

On the first Sunday of every month all the churches in the Austin convocation come together to do one large youth event. In doing this youth from different churches have the opportunity to get to know one another. This coming Sunday we are having our monthly SunOne event at All Saints, which is located on UT's campus. SunOne will begin at 1:30pm and will last until 3:30pm. Parents are asked to help provide rides to and from the event. Every SunOne event is different, and this month we are going to be doing a scavenger hunt around UT's campus. All the youth will be divided into teams and sent out to find all the things on their list. If your youth is interested in participating in this event please have them meet me at All Saints at 1:30 with $5.

Because SunOne is going to begin earlier than normal Sunday Lunch will happen at the Chipotle on The Drag this coming Sunday.

Spring Break Retreat

The Spring Break Retreat is quickly approaching! In a little over a month we will be invading Camp Allen for four days filled with fun, laughter, and worship. A quick reminder that the early bird sign-up is going to end on February 15th. While youth can still continue to register for the retreat after February 15th they will have to pay an extra $50.

When are we going?
We will leave Wednesday, March 17th at 5pm from St. Michael's. As we drive to Camp Allen we will stop for dinner. We will return Saturday, March 20th around noon and parents can pick up their youth from St. Michael's.

What will we be doing?
Playing games, swimming (weather permitting), high and low ropes course, cooking, eating, learning, and much much more!

What should you bring?
Comfortable clothes for 4 days, clothing appropriate for cool weather just in case, a swim suit just in case, closed toe shoes that are comfortable for walking/running, bedding or sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, $$$ for dinner on the way there. As always, feel free to bring a friend!

What should I not bring?
drugs, alcohol, weapons, cell phones, and portable game systems

Parents: I am going to be looking for some drivers and sponsors to help with the retreat. If you are interested in getting involved please let me know!

Flyers for this retreat can be found in Room 8 and the parish hall. The inside of the flyer is the release form that needs to be filled out and returned to me with your $50 deposit.

Summer 2010 Mission Trips

This coming summer St. Michael's is trying something new. Instead of simply having one mission trip, we are offering two mission trips. Unlike in the past, this year any youth who has finished 6th grade is invited to participate in a mission trip.

Macon Georgia: July 9th - July 18th
This trip is open to anyone who has completed 6th grade. It will cost $600, which includes the $100 deposit that is required to hold an individuals spot. This price is subject to change depending on the final number count.

Mission Trip Timeline
2/28 - $100 deposit due
3/31 - first payment of $250 due and all paperwork must be completed
4/28 - second payment of $250 due
5/30 - mandatory group meeting with both parents and you to go over preparations
In late June/early July we will have a final meeting to discuss last minute logistics.
7/9 - depart late evening for Houston
7/18 - return home

While we are at Mercer college we will have afternoon mission projects rich and varied, including working in a local food bank, playing with children at a community center, and working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity.

Fundraising is a vital part of any mission trip. I am going to help the youth in organizing and setting up the fundraising, but I really want them to take ownership of their fundraising. I think it is important that they take a large role in this element, so that they can feel proud of how much money they raise. All money that is raised will be used to help offset the price of the mission trip. In order for youth to receive money raised from the fundraising they must participate in the fundraising activity.

NYC: August 1st - August 6th

This trip is open to anyone who has completed the 9th grade. It will cost $1,000, which includes the $100 deposit which is required to hold an individual's spot. This price is subject to change depending on the price of airfare.

Mission Trip Timeline
2/28 - $100 deposit due
3/31 - first payment of $250 due and all paperwork
4/28 - second payment of $250 due
5/26 - third payment of $250 due
6/13 - mandatory meeting of both youth and adults to discuss the upcoming mission trip
6/30 - final payment of $150 due
7/25 - final meeting one week before departing for NYC
8/1 - depart early morning for NYC, meet at the airport
8/6 - return form NYC, parents meet us at the airport

While we are in NYC the youth will be exposed to new situations, opportunities, and physical surroundings that will challenge their stereotypes and assumptions. By living in an urban setting, they will interact with epople of the city. Participants are fed in small, family operated, ethnic restaurants that provide an additional window into the cultures of the world.

Fundraising is a vital part of any mission trip. I am going to help the youth in organizing and setting up the fundraising, but I really want them to take ownership of their fundraising. I think it is important that they take a large role in this element, so that they can feel proud of how much money they raise. If you are interested in one or both of these mission trips please pick up orange and blue packets in either Room 8 or the parish hall that discuss these trips in greater detail.
